Dunbar Hill Memorial Honors Local Soldier
Richard E. Megin, born in 1932, lived on Calamus Meadow Road in 1950, and worked at Winchester Repeating Arms Company. He served in the United States Army and was killed in action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on June 15, 1953. Private Megin was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal. He is buried in Hamden Plains Cemetery.

A small park near the corner of Benham Street and Dunbar Hill Road contains a plaque honoring Private Megin.
Other plaques in the park honor deceased members of the Dunbar Hill Volunteer Fire Association, whose firehouse is adjacent, and Everett Warner, who donated land to the Association. Nineteenth-century maps show the houses of many members of the Warner family in the area.

Private Megin's father, Robert Megin, was a building contractor who developed the Rosehurst Acres subdivision near the firehouse, naming two of the streets, Richard Drive and Megin Drive, for his son. Another street in that subdivision, Schupp Road, was named for Staff Sgt. Robert A. Schupp, Army Air Force, who died in World War II.
Many other streets throughout Hamden were named in honor of its service members who were killed in action. Two previous articles on this site have told the stories of subdivisions with several such streets, Honor Hill and Hepburn Ridge.
