MILESTONE No. 3
East side - On the front lawn of the Whitneyville Congregational Church,
opposite Ralston Avenue

This milestone lies under a tree just north of Whitneyville Congregational Church.

The church congregation was founded in 1795, but the present church building dates from 1834, after the Cheshire Turnpike was laid out in 1800.

The present Lake Whitney dam was also not yet constructed, so the road followed a route closer to what is now the lake, on the driveway between it and the church.

The turnpike continued to follow a straighter route than Whitney Avenue does up to its intersection with Ford Street, resulting in Milestone 4 being almost 1.1 miles away along the avenue.
