While she grew up in Maryland, and attended college in Maine, Beth settled in Connecticut after marrying, moving to Hamden in 1982 and raising her children here. The Shutts family (father, son, and daughter) own and operate Shutts Tree Service in Hamden.
After receiving her Master of Library Science from Southern in 1987, Beth worked at Cheshire Public Library for 23 years, primarily as a Reference Librarian. Retired in January 2012, she was able to devote more time to the freelance indexing business she founded in 2009. While most of her work now is in the area of non-fiction books for children, she has also been indexing local histories, genealogies, and church and census records.
While indexing she discovered a passion for local histories. She says, “Connecticut is such a great state for this because there are so many small towns, each with their own story.” She has done extensive research on and organization of her own family and will be able to assist others in these types of searches.
Beth says, “I’m looking forward to discovering more of the rich history of Hamden and it’s landmarks, learning more about the founding families, assisting people in the search for their ancestors, promoting the holdings of the Historical Society library, and answering lots of interesting questions!”
